Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Tuesday inaugurated the Kano State Neighbourhood Watch Corps during a colourful passing-out parade held at the Sani Abacha Stadium.
The development was announced in a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

The newly formed security outfit consists of 2,000 personnel drawn from all 44 local government areas of the state—130 females and 1,870 males—tasked with boosting community-level security and intelligence gathering.

Governor Yusuf stated that the operatives would be fully equipped to tackle key security challenges such as banditry, drug abuse, thuggery, and other criminal activities affecting both urban and rural areas.

As part of the launch, the governor unveiled 88 Hilux patrol vehicles and 440 motorcycles to enhance surveillance, rapid response, and overall operational effectiveness of the Neighbourhood Watch Corps.

While addressing the operatives, Governor Yusuf urged them to uphold discipline, integrity, and commitment to duty, reminding them that their primary responsibility is to safeguard their respective communities.

He reiterated that ensuring the safety of Kano residents remains a central focus of his administration, stressing that peace and stability are vital to economic development, educational advancement, and social progress.

The governor also assured that his administration will continue to invest in security infrastructure, personnel welfare, and strategic partnerships with conventional security agencies to maintain a more secure environment across the state.

In his remarks, Katsina State Governor, Malam Umar Dikko Radda, praised the initiative and expressed readiness to collaborate with Kano in combating crime, especially in border communities affected by cross-border insecurity.

Governor Radda highlighted that strong inter-state cooperation is necessary to effectively tackle security challenges in the North-West and achieve lasting peace in the region.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by former Kano Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso; deputy governors of Zamfara, Jigawa, and Sokoto states; the Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II; Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi; alongside senior government officials, traditional leaders, security chiefs, and other dignitaries from within and outside the state.
