Kano State House of Assembly has asked Governor Abba Yusuf to extend the ongoing installation of streetlights from Mariri–Maiduguri Road to Dawakin Kudu, Warawa and Wudil local government areas to bolster security and improve nighttime activities on the axis.
The resolution followed deliberations at plenary presided over by the speaker, Rt. Hon. Ismail Falgore.
Moving a joint motion, members representing Warawa, Dawakin Kudu and Wudil constituencies: Hon. Labaran Madari, Hon. Shuiabu Rabi’u and Hon. Ali Abdullahi Manager, said the extension of the project would reduce incidents of robbery and other attacks reported on the busy road.
The lawmakers described the Mariri–Maiduguri–Dawakin Kudu–Warawa–Wudil road as a major route used by commuters day and night, stressing that poor visibility had exposed residents, especially motorcyclists and patients seeking emergency healthcare at night, to security risks.
According to them, hoodlums frequently attack unsuspecting travellers and dispossess them of valuables at four black spots along the road.
They maintained that extending the streetlight installation would not only enhance security but also beautify the state in line with the administration’s urban renewal drive.
In a related development, the House also called on the state government to construct key roads across several local government areas to boost socio-economic activities.
The resolutions followed separate motions by Hon. Sule Lawan (Tudun Wada), Hon. Ali Lawan Alhassan (Bagwai/Shanono), Hon. Abubakar Danladi Isa (Gaya) and Hon. Musa Haruna Tahir (Albasu).
The affected roads include Yarkawo–Yartalani in Tudun Wada LGA; Kwanar Audua–Dafka Sare-Sare–Unguwar Tofa–Ballewa–Yatsawa–Takalmawa–Rimi Badingu–Jabar Kanawa–Surfan Raayi–Kare in Bagwai LGA; and Kwanar Amarawa–Kademi–Sayaya–Faragai linking Gaya and Albasu LGAs.
The lawmakers said constructing the roads would enhance trade, improve movement of goods and services, and uplift livelihoods in the benefiting communities.
