Kano State Government has intensified efforts to reclaim and safeguard key public parks in the state capital, as part of a broader strategy to strengthen urban environmental sustainability and protect green assets from encroachment.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr Dahir M. Hashim, following his inspection visit to Green Park, Nassarawa Park, and Audu Bako Park, where ongoing fencing works are being carried out.
According to the Commissioner, the visit was aimed at personally supervising the fencing of the important public green spaces as part of the Ministry’s continued efforts to recover, protect and sustainably manage Kano’s environmental assets.
He expressed appreciation to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for what he described as unwavering support toward the recovery and protection of critical green areas, noting that the move reflects the administration’s strong commitment to environmental sustainability, urban renewal and the well-being of residents.
Dr. Hashim emphasised that urban green spaces play a vital role in the health and resilience of modern cities, describing them as natural carbon sinks that help regulate temperature, improve air quality and provide safe environments for recreation and community life.
“In a rapidly growing city like Kano, protecting and revitalising these green areas is vital for maintaining environmental balance and improving the quality of life for residents,” he stated.
He added that the ongoing fencing would safeguard the parks from encroachment and misuse while creating a solid foundation for their proper restoration and long-term management.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to protecting Kano’s green heritage and ensuring that public green spaces are preserved for the benefit of present and future generations.
Also, the commissioner led a team of stakeholders on an inspection of ongoing roundabout rehabilitation and urban greenery projects across the state capital.
The inspection tour covered Alu Avenue in Nassarawa GRA, Ahmadu Bello Way, Hospital Road, and Baban Gwari along Katsina Road, where landscaping and beautification efforts are underway as part of the government’s urban renewal drive.
A statement signed by Maryam Abdulqadir, Director of Public Enlightenment (DPE) of the Ministry, said the Commissioner further highlighted the importance of urban greenery to the overall resilience of the city, stressing that safeguarding and revitalising green spaces remains essential to maintaining environmental balance and enhancing the quality of life of Kano residents.
