Kano State’s Open Government Partnership (OGP) process marked a key step forward after a multi-stakeholder meeting convened by the OGP Secretariat to guide the transition of the Civil Society (CS) Steering Committee and strengthen collaboration with government officials.

According to a statement signed by Musaddiq Kabir Adam, Head of Secretariat, Kano State OGP, the meeting brought together representatives from government and civil society to discuss priorities under the OGP framework.

“The meeting served as a vital bridge for the transitioning Civil Society Steering Committee to engage directly with incoming government actors, thereby preserving institutional memory, ensuring continuity of reform commitments, and fostering a shared understanding of past achievements and future challenges,” the statement read.

The CS Steering Committee, which has completed its tenure, has announced plans to hold elections for new members.

“This step is intended to ensure balanced multi-stakeholder representation and effective collaboration with the newly appointed Government Steering Committee in full compliance with OGP global standards and the principles of co-creation,” the Secretariat said.

Preparations for the election are underway, with the Secretariat coordinating logistical arrangements. The process is expected to conclude before the end of the month.

The statement stressed that the election is “designed not as a mere formality but as a deliberate step to deepen co-creation, ensuring that new leadership inherits both the momentum and the institutional knowledge required to drive ambitious measurable reforms.”

Civil society organizations (CSOs), community-based organizations (CBOs), the private sector, media, professional bodies, academia, and development partners have been advised to prepare for participation in the elections.

“Further updates on the electioneering process will be communicated in due course. We continue to value and appreciate the steadfast support of every stakeholder in Kano State,” the statement concluded.

The Secretariat expressed appreciation for the continued collaboration of all participants in advancing open, responsive, and accountable governance in Kano State.
