The Kano State Police Command has arrested a suspect over the circulation of audio and video clips allegedly containing inflammatory statements capable of inciting public disorder in the state.
The police said the suspect was apprehended during a sting operation after the command intercepted reports about the circulation of the materials, which were said to be spreading fear among residents.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ibrahim Bakori, disclosed this in a public alert issued on Thursday.
According to the statement, the suspect is currently being interrogated while investigations are ongoing.
Bakori said the command takes the development seriously and warned individuals against creating or spreading content that could disrupt public peace.
“The Kano State Police Command has intercepted reports of circulating audio and video clips containing statements capable of inciting public disorder and creating fear among residents,” the statement read.
He added, “The Command, in a sting operation, swiftly arrested the suspect, who is currently being interrogated.”
The police commissioner stressed that the suspect would face the full weight of the law if found culpable at the end of the investigations.
He also condemned the creation and dissemination of inflammatory content, warning that the command would not tolerate hate speech, incitement, or acts capable of triggering violence.
“We strongly condemn the creation and dissemination of such inflammatory content and warn individuals involved to cease immediately. Any person found spreading false information will be arrested, investigated and prosecuted accordingly,” Bakori said.
He further assured residents that the security situation in Kano remains under control, adding that adequate measures had been put in place to prevent any breach of peace.
The police said it was working closely with other security agencies to monitor developments and respond promptly to any security threat.
Bakori also urged residents to remain calm and vigilant, and to cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious activity.
“Residents are urged to remain calm and vigilant, and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or through the emergency numbers provided by the command,” he said.
The commissioner also appealed to community and religious leaders, as well as traditional rulers and other stakeholders, to promote peaceful coexistence among residents.
According to him, collective responsibility is required to maintain peace and stability in the state.
