The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old man, Ididiong James, for allegedly assaulting his mother and possessing an English Beretta pistol with eight rounds of ammunition.
This is contained in a statement by the command’s spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Kiyawa, in Kano on Wednesday.
Mr Kiyawa said that at about 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, police officers attached to the Panshekara Division responded to a distress call and found Mr James beating his mother at their residence in Panshekara Quarters, Kano.
The suspect fled the scene upon the police’s arrival, but his mother handed over the pistol and ammunition, stating that she had discovered it in her son’s bag and refused to give it to him, leading to the violent attack.
The suspect was subsequently arrested and is currently in police custody.
The commissioner of police, Ibrahim Bakori, commended the mother for her courage and urged parents to be vigilant.
“The actions of this mother are commendable, and we appreciate her bravery in standing up against her son’s violent behavior,” Mr Bakori said.
He also urged parents to monitor their children’s activities and report any suspicious behaviours to the authorities.
“The Kano State Police Command urges the citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency numbers: 08032419754, 08123821575, or 09029292926.
