The Kano State Government has inaugurated a storm water drainage project in Ladanai Quarters, Nasarawa Local Government Area, aimed at addressing persistent flooding in the community.

The Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr Dahiru Muhammad-Hashim, inaugurated the project on Tuesday in Kano, stating that the initiative aligns with Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf’s commitment to improving the livelihoods of residents.

Muhammad-Hashim said the project was executed in response to requests from the community, noting that it reflects the government’s inclusive approach to development.

“This community has been experiencing flood-related issues, particularly during the rainy season, which affects residents socially and economically,” he said.

He added that similar drainage projects had been carried out across the local government, including in Hotoro Arewa and other communities, as part of efforts to tackle urban flooding.

According to him, the state government is integrating effective drainage systems into ongoing road construction, renewal and rehabilitation projects to ensure a functional drainage master plan.

He expressed optimism that the initiatives would significantly reduce flooding and enable residents to enjoy a safer rainy season.

The commissioner, however, urged residents to take ownership of the project by ensuring proper maintenance and preventing misuse.

“We have delivered the infrastructure, but sustainability depends on the community. They must avoid practices like dumping waste in the drains or allowing heavy-duty trucks to damage the structures,” he said.

Muhammad-Hashim advised residents to report any challenges to the ministry to ensure prompt intervention and long-term sustainability of the project.

Also speaking, Chairman of Nasarawa Local Government, Alhaji Yusuf Ogan-Boye, represented by the Councillor of Hotoro North, Ibrahim Muhammad-Musa, commended the state government for the intervention.

He said the flooding had previously hindered children from attending school in the area.

A community representative, Jamilu Kabiru, also lauded the government for the project and called for the relocation of companies operating in the area to prevent damage to the drainage infrastructure.
