A former Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria, Prof. Abdalla Uba Adamu, has retired from Bayero University Kano after attaining the age of 70.
Adamu, who holds dual professorships in Science Education and Media and Cultural Communication, announced his retirement in a statement posted on his Facebook page on Friday night.
“With gratitude to Allah (SWT) for keeping me alive and in good health, I formally announce my retirement from the service of Bayero University Kano, having attained the age of seventy,” he wrote.
The professor said he spent nearly 46 years at the institution, describing the university as his home.
“Bayero University has been my home for almost forty-six uninterrupted years. I joined the system on July 24, 1980, as a Graduate Assistant in the Department of Education. Today, I retire from the Department of Information and Media Studies, in a faculty I conceptualised in 2014,” he said.
Reflecting on his academic journey, Adamu described it as both challenging and fulfilling.
“The journey was tough yet deeply rewarding. I faced challenges and setbacks but always moved forward. I have no regrets about the path I chose, as it shaped me into a better person,” he said.
He also recalled an early discussion with his father about studying medicine, noting that his career later aligned with his passion for research.
“As retirement approached, I realised that I had been doing what I always wanted—research. That realisation was significant. There is only one word for it: Alhamdulillah,” he added.
The former Vice-Chancellor expressed appreciation to his family, colleagues, and associates for their support throughout his career.
“I am grateful to everyone who supported me throughout this journey, especially my wife, children, and grandchildren, who remain a constant source of pride,” he said.
Speaking on life after retirement, Adamu said he would remain active in academic work, particularly research and writing.
“This is not the end but the beginning of a new phase. I will continue to engage in research and writing, with several book projects already underway,” he said.
