BUK to Seize Stray Animals, Penalize Their Owners

Bayero University, Kano has announced plans to impound stray animals found roaming within its campuses and sanction their owners as part of efforts to enforce housing regulations and maintain environmental hygiene across staff quarters.

The university management said the decision followed concerns over violations of its housing policies, stressing that the rearing of animals within the institution’s premises is strictly prohibited under the Revised Guidelines for Staff Housing Allocation and Maintenance.

In a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs, Lamara Garba, on behalf of the Registrar, the university warned that residents who keep the permitted minimum number of domestic animals must ensure they are properly confined at all times.

“Allowing animals to roam freely within the University community constitutes a violation of established regulations and poses environmental, health, and safety concerns,” the statement read.

The management disclosed that the institution’s Security Division will immediately commence the arrest and impoundment of stray animals found roaming within the university campuses.

It added that owners of such animals will be identified and held accountable in line with existing regulations.

BUK further cautioned that any staff member found contravening the directive would face appropriate sanctions as stipulated in the Staff Quarters Residency Guidelines.

The university urged all residents of the Old and New Campuses, Zoo Road Staff Quarters, and the School of Continuing Education to comply fully with the directive, noting that the measures are necessary to maintain order, hygiene, and the integrity of the campus environment.
