Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening ethical standards and professionalism in public information management.

Yusuf made this known while declaring open a two-day capacity-building workshop for Information and Zonal Information Officers drawn from the 44 local government areas of the state.

The governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, spoke at the opening ceremony of the workshop held in Kano.

The workshop, themed, “Safeguarding Ethical and Professional Standards in Public Information Management: The Role of Information Officers,” focused on enhancing the capacity of information managers in the state.

According to the statement signed by the Director of Special Duties, Sani Abba Yola, the governor described investment in human capital development as key to effective public administration.

He said, “investment in human capital development is a critical driver of effective public administration, noting that continuous training not only enhances skills but also boosts workers’ morale and productivity in a rapidly evolving technological environment.”

Yusuf added that his administration would continue to prioritise training and retraining programmes at all levels.

He said, “this administration will continue to prioritise training and retraining programmes locally, nationally, and internationally to equip public servants with the requisite knowledge and skills for efficient service delivery.”

The governor stressed the importance of Information Officers in promoting transparency and countering misinformation.

He said, “Information Officers play a pivotal role in promoting transparency, bridging the gap between government and the public, and ensuring that citizens have access to accurate and timely information, especially in an era characterised by fake news and disinformation.”

Yusuf further noted that the government relies on feedback from Information Officers to improve governance.

According to him, “the government relies on Information Officers for feedback on public perception, community challenges, and policy impact,” urging them to remain proactive in reporting grassroots developments.

He also called on public officials to support Information Officers in the discharge of their duties to strengthen democratic processes.

The governor assured participants of the government’s commitment to providing modern working tools and a conducive working environment.

He commended the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs for organising the workshop, and praised the Commissioner for Information, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, for his “doggedness and innovative initiative.”

Earlier, Waiya described the workshop as a demonstration of the ministry’s commitment to excellence in information dissemination and professional development.

He said, “the workshop is a demonstration of the Ministry’s commitment to excellence in information dissemination and professional development.”

The commissioner also appreciated the governor for supporting capacity-building initiatives.

According to him, “several training programmes conducted under the present administration have significantly improved the productivity and performance of Information Officers.”

Waiya added that the workshop would enhance participants’ understanding of ethical standards, transparency, and digital communication strategies.

He urged Information Officers to uphold professionalism and actively engage the public to build trust in government activities.

He said the ministry would continue to strengthen partnerships with media organisations and stakeholders to promote effective communication and capacity development.
