The Kano State Police Command has announced a total ban on the use of fireworks and knockouts, commonly known as ‘bangers’, as part of heightened security measures for the 2026 New Year celebrations.

The directive was contained in a press release issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, following a security meeting chaired by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori.

According to the release, the Commissioner of Police convened a follow-up meeting with operational commanders on December 29, 2025, to fine-tune security arrangements for the festive period.

“The use of knockouts or bangers is strictly prohibited, while the use of fireworks is completely banned,” the police said, noting that the measure was aimed at ensuring public safety and preventing unnecessary panic during the celebrations.

The command disclosed that it has put “adequate security arrangements in place” across the state, with recreational centres, places of visit, and other public locations fortified by security personnel.

It added that “round-the-clock patrols, effective traffic control, and improved intelligence gathering mechanisms” have been activated to ensure a peaceful New Year celebration.

CP Bakori, according to the statement, commended officers for what he described as “successful security coverage during the concluded Christmas celebrations,” while stressing the need for “intensified patrols, visibility policing, and intelligence-led operations.”

Residents were also advised to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies. The police urged members of the public to “avoid suspicious objects, report suspicious persons or movements,” and adhere strictly to safe driving rules, including avoiding underage driving, over-speeding, and reckless driving.

The command further warned that unauthorised horse riding during the festive period is prohibited.

Residents were encouraged to report emergencies or suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through designated emergency lines provided by the command.

The Kano State Police Command wished residents a peaceful New Year celebration, praying for “peace, prosperity, and security” across the state as 2026 begins.
