The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Kano has taken a decisive step to strengthen professionalism among online media operators, as the chairman of its Kano Online Chapel, Abubakar Abdulkadir Dangambo, received the report of the chapel’s membership screening committee.
Dangambo commended the committee for conducting the exercise with fairness, transparency, and orderliness, noting that the panel was set up to ensure applicants seeking NUJ membership meet the required professional standards.
He explained that the initiative became necessary following the surge of online media practitioners and social media influencers applying to join the union.
“The committee strictly applied the provisions of the NUJ constitution and guidelines in screening applicants, ensuring due process and full compliance with the union’s procedures,” Dangambo said.
According to him, the exercise is part of ongoing efforts to safeguard the integrity of journalism and reinforce professionalism among operators of online media platforms in Kano State.
Presenting the report, Chairman of the Membership Screening Committee, Aliyu Mudi Suleiman, said the panel meticulously reviewed applicants’ credentials, including Corporate Affairs Commission registration documents, educational qualifications, and other relevant requirements.
Suleiman disclosed that out of 46 applicants screened so far, 31 were approved for membership, seven were placed on hold for further review, while eight were denied for failing to meet the conditions outlined in the union’s constitution.
He added that the committee had also submitted recommendations to the chapel’s leadership on measures to improve the admission process for new members in the future.
