Court set to hear FOI case on constituency projects in Kano

A Kano State High Court has set Monday, April 27, 2026, to hear a case over access to public information on constituency projects.

The case was filed by a human rights and anti-corruption activist, Umar Ibrahim Umar, after the State Commissioner for Works and Housing allegedly failed to respond to his Freedom of Information (FOI) request.

Umar is asking the court to compel the government to release details of constituency projects.

He said this would help improve transparency and allow journalists, civil society groups, and citizens to track how public funds are spent.

The situation became more controversial when the commissioner reportedly asked for N100m as a processing fee before releasing the information.

In a statement, Umar confirmed the hearing date and venue.

He said, “The matter will be heard at the Kano State High Court, Audu Bako Secretariat, where all necessary court processes have already been duly served on the Commissioner.”

He explained that the issue began after he submitted a formal request on October 10, 2025, seeking details of constituency projects in Kano State.

Umar also called on the public and the media to pay attention to the case.

He said, “The public, media and civil society organisations are encouraged to follow proceedings closely, as the case raises critical questions about access to public information, transparency and the rule of law.”

The activist has already taken the commissioner, Engr. Marwan Ahmed, to court, describing the N100m demand as illegal, excessive, and contrary to the FOI Act.
