Court restores the NNPP executive committee

A Kano State High Court has invalidated the dissolution of the state, local government, and ward executive councils of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) in the State, declaring the decision of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) null and void.

Justice Nasiru Saminu, in an ex parte order granted, also restrained the NNPP’s NWC from taking any further steps regarding the leadership structure of the party in Kano pending the hearing and determination of a motion on notice filed by the plaintiffs.

The suit, marked No. K/06/2026 was instituted by Abdullahi Zubairu Imam and five others on behalf of the NNPP executive committees across the state’s 44 local government areas.

The plaintiffs sued the NNPP, challenging the dissolution of the party’s executive councils in Kano.

In the interim injunction, Justice Saminu directed all parties to maintain the status quo ante as of December 30, 2025, prior to the dissolution directive issued by the NWC.

According to the court order, after hearing submissions by K.K. Njidda, Esq., with S.A. Muhammad, Esq., counsel to the applicants, the court restrained the defendant, its agents, privies, ad-hoc committees, the NWC, or any persons acting on its instructions from appointing caretaker committees at the state, local government and ward levels in Kano, or from taking any further steps on the subject matter of the suit.

The court further granted the plaintiffs leave to issue and serve court processes on the NNPP at its national secretariat located at 11 Mahatma Gandhi Street, Area 11, Garki, Abuja, which is outside the court’s jurisdiction. A copy of the order was signed by the court registrar, Abba Sa’ad.

The ruling follows the NWC’s earlier decision to dissolve the NNPP executive councils across Kano State after the suspension of the state party chairman, Hon. Hashim Dungurawa.

The NWC subsequently announced Abdullahi Abiya as acting chairman of the party in the state.

With the court’s order restoring the pre-dissolution arrangement, the development effectively affirms the existing leadership structure in Kano pending the substantive hearing of the case.
