The Federal Government has installed a 1-megawatt solar power system and 200 solar-powered streetlights at Bayero University Kano, BUK, as part of efforts to enhance campus security and improve learning conditions under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The project, executed by the Energy Commission of Nigeria, ECN, is located at the university’s old campus.

Speaking at the commissioning, the Director-General of ECN, Mustapha Abdullahi, said the initial plan was to install 100 streetlights but was later increased to 200 in recognition of the university’s importance and large population.

He noted that the intervention would significantly improve lighting across the campus, facilitate night-time academic activities, and strengthen security.

According to him, BUK has a population of over 40,000, making such infrastructure critical to creating a conducive learning environment.

Mr Abdullahi also disclosed plans to replicate similar projects in other parts of the country, particularly in Northern Nigeria, to enhance security and promote public well-being.

He commended the Vice-Chancellor, Haruna Musa, for providing an enabling environment that ensured the smooth execution of the project.

In his remarks, Prof. Musa praised the Federal Government for delivering the project at a critical time, noting that the initiative under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would significantly improve power supply across Nigerian universities.

He added that some parts of the campus had previously faced security challenges due to poor lighting and proximity to neighbouring communities, but expressed confidence that the new solar installations would help address the situation.

The Vice-Chancellor also revealed that adequate security measures have been put in place to safeguard the facilities and assured that the university management would ensure proper utilisation and compliance.
