The Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to press freedom and responsible journalism as it joined the global community to commemorate the 2026 World Press Freedom Day.

In a statement on Sunday shared on Facebook and signed by the state Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, the government said the annual event, observed every May 3, is not just symbolic but a time for reflection and renewed commitment to media independence.

“This important day serves not merely as a ceremonial occasion, but as a moment for deep reflection, renewed resistance against threats to press freedom, and enhanced commitment to the ideals of a free, responsible, and independent media,” the statement read.

It noted that this year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace,” underscores the role of the media in promoting unity, stability, and sustainable development.

The government said it identifies itself as a media-friendly administration under Governor Abba Yusuf, anchored on openness and engagement with journalists.

It added that this approach has been recognised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists as a “Journalist-Friendly” government.

Reaffirming its stance, the government stated, “Our media policy shall always be guided by respect for press freedom and we will not condone any form of intimidation or suppressing the professional conduct of the journalism practice in the state.”

It said regular dialogue with media stakeholders has been institutionalised, alongside deliberate efforts to support digital journalism and engage practitioners in the evolving media space.

The statement also stressed the need for professionalism and ethical responsibility, particularly in addressing challenges such as misinformation and fake news.

Calling for responsible journalism, it added, “A free press must also be fair and development-oriented, working in partnership with government and society at large.”

The government said it would continue to prioritise journalists’ welfare and improve access to timely and accurate information to enable the media to carry out its constitutional role effectively.

“As part of its broader commitment, the administration shall continue to prioritise the welfare of journalists and enhance access to timely and accurate information, thereby enabling the media to effectively carry out its constitutional role,” it stated.

The Kano State Government urged journalists and media organisations to remain professional and committed to promoting peace and development.

“In conclusion, Kano State Government reaffirms its unwavering commitment to upholding press freedom and providing an enabling environment for media practice, while urging practitioners to remain professional, objective, and dedicated to the advancement of our society,” the statement added.
