Kano South legislators convene a private meeting as political alliances shift

Senator Suleiman Abdulrahman Kawu, representing Kano South, on Monday convened a closed-door meeting with senior federal lawmakers from the senatorial district in the nation’s capital.

The meeting included Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, member representing Rano, Kibiya, and Bunkure Federal Constituency; Abdullahi Sani Rogo, representing Rogo and Karaye; Alhassan Ado Doguwa, representing Tudun Wada and Doguwa; and Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa, member representing Kiru and Bebeji Federal Constituency.

At the time of filing this report, no official communique had been released. However, sources familiar with the meeting told Kano Times that discussions centered on “defining the political stance of Kano South in the ongoing Kano State political landscape.”

Kano South, one of the state’s most politically significant senatorial districts, comprises 16 local government areas. Despite its prominence, the zone has not produced a governor since 1992, when Senator Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya held the office.

Political observers say the lawmakers are expected to make their position public in the coming days as political realignments in the state intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The meeting comes on the same day that former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The move, seen as a major development in northern Nigerian politics, was marked by a ceremony at Gidan Kwankwasiyya, Miller Road, Bompai, Kano, where Kwankwaso received his membership card.

Prominent political figures at the event included former Senate President David Mark, former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Senator Dino Melaye, and former APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun.

Kwankwaso’s defection follows months of turbulence within the NNPP, which lost key figures—including current Kano Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf—to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Political analysts say Kwankwaso’s entry into the ADC is likely to boost the party’s profile in Kano and reshape alliances across the region.
