Kano Ulama Coalition Denounces External Interference, Upholds Sharia and Hisbah Bodies

The Coalition of Ulama and Islamic Organizations in Kano State has strongly denounced what it termed unjustified and provocative interference by the United States Government and the U.S. Congress in Nigeria’s domestic affairs, particularly concerning the implementation of Sharia law and the activities of the Hisbah institution.

In a statement issued and signed by Dr. Saidu Ahmad Dukawa on behalf of the coalition, the group firmly rejected reported calls for the Nigerian government to abolish Sharia law and dismantle the Hisbah corps, describing such demands as a direct violation of Nigeria’s sovereignty, democratic values, and constitutional provisions.

The coalition stressed that Sharia law is both a constitutional and divinely ordained right of Muslims in Kano State and other parts of the country, noting that its application is strictly limited to adherents of Islam. It further explained that the Hisbah institution operates within the framework of state laws enacted by Houses of Assembly and is deeply rooted in Islamic principles.

According to the statement, the Hisbah corps has contributed significantly to maintaining peaceful coexistence, safeguarding places of worship—including mosques and churches—and assisting security agencies during times of unrest. The coalition added that religious leaders from both Islamic and Christian communities in Kano have consistently worked together to defuse tensions and promote harmony.

The group cautioned that foreign pressure and the spread of misinformation could threaten Nigeria’s delicate interfaith peace. It therefore urged both the Federal and State Governments to stand firm against intimidation from external powers, regardless of their influence, and to prioritize accountability to the Nigerian people.

The coalition also called on Islamic scholars and clerics nationwide to engage in continuous alqanut (special prayers) seeking divine intervention against insecurity and forces undermining national peace. Muslims were equally urged to embrace repentance, uphold Islamic morals, and continue supporting lawful religious institutions.

Reaffirming its confidence in Nigeria’s sovereignty, the coalition appealed to all citizens to remain united, reject divisive narratives, and pursue peaceful means of resolving differences.
