UNICAL Convocation: Emir Bayero Tells Graduates That Education Without Humility Is Meaningless

The Chancellor of the University of Calabar and the 15th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, has advised graduates to prioritise character over academic titles, saying true wisdom is demonstrated through humility and conduct rather than the display of achievements.

Bayero spoke at the university’s 38th convocation ceremony held at the Abraham Ordia Stadium, where he emphasised that genuine knowledge is reflected in restraint, humility, and respect for others.

“Some acquire impressive degrees, yet when they speak, it becomes clear that the knowledge they carry is only a burden. True learning reveals itself quietly through grace and conduct,” he said.

He cautioned against arrogance among the educated, stressing that those who are truly learned do not seek validation through anger, bitterness, or the public display of achievements.

According to him, education should refine character and not diminish it, urging graduates to ensure their learning translates into positive conduct and service.

“Let your knowledge illuminate, not intimidate. Let your speech reflect wisdom, not noise,” he advised.

Also speaking, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Offiong Efanga, described the convocation as a milestone in the institution’s academic journey and a reaffirmation of its commitment to scholarship and excellence.

He disclosed that 743 students bagged master’s degrees, 9,173 graduated with bachelor’s degrees, while 152 obtained diplomas. He added that 52 graduates finished with first-class honours.

Efanga further stated that the institution would absorb some of the best-performing graduates into critical roles within the university.
