The Kano State government says it has constructed 324 functional Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) in the last two years, out of the proposed 483 PHCs across wards in 44 local government areas.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran, disclosed this on Thursday in Kano, saying the initiative was part of the government’s efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery and ensure quick access to medical services at the grassroots.

He said, the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf inherited a largely non-functional health system in May 2023, with most state hospitals facing serious infrastructural and operational challenges.

He explained that the government tackled the challenges head-on by rehabilitating major hospitals, including Nassarawa Specialist Hospital, Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital and Hasiya Bayero Paediatric Hospital, alongside 16 other hospitals across the state’s local government areas, many of which have been completed.

The commissioner also revealed that the state’s Drugs Revolving Scheme, which had been left with heavy debts and no drugs by the previous administration, has now been fully revived.

Labaran further disclosed that N40 billion has been proposed for the health sector in the 2026 budget, noting that the allocation is aimed at consolidating ongoing reforms and strengthening healthcare delivery across the state.

He said the government had also commenced the recruitment of over 2,600 health workers to address manpower shortages in hospitals and primary healthcare centres.

The recruitment, he said, would cover medical doctors, nurses, midwives, environmental health officers, laboratory scientists and other critical cadres required to enhance service delivery.

According to him, priority in the 2026 budget has also been given to the renovation of health facilities and the provision of modern medical equipment to improve service capacity, reduce patient waiting time and strengthen emergency response.

He commended Governor Yusuf for his sustained investment and unwavering commitment to the health sector, noting that the governor’s support had enabled the ministry to pursue key reforms aimed at improving maternal and child health outcomes, addressing disease outbreaks and strengthening community-level healthcare.
