Qadiriyya Sect observes Eid prayer in Kano a day after the Sultan’s announcement

Table of Content

While most Muslims in Kano State observed Eid al-Fitr prayers on Friday, followers of the Qadiriyya sect held their own prayers on Saturday in the Makwarari area of Kano city.

Sheikh Khalifa Sheikh Sammani Yusuf Makwarari led the congregation, explaining that the sect did not follow the directive of the Sultan of Sokoto, who had announced Friday as the day for Eid prayers.

The Sultan of Sokoto, who also serves as President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), is the recognized authority for determining the beginning and end of Ramadan through verified moon sightings across Nigeria.

His pronouncements are generally followed nationwide to maintain unity among Muslims.

However, disagreements over moon sightings—particularly when reports come from neighboring countries—sometimes lead to differences in observance among clerics and communities in northern Nigeria.
