The Kano State Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples’ Party, Hashimu Dungurawa, has reaffirmed that he remains the legitimate leader of the party in the state, dismissing recent attempts by some ward executives to sack him.

Dungurawa’s comments came barely 24 hours after executives of Gargari Ward in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area signed a resolution purporting to expel him from the party.

In a telephone interview with The PUNCH on Tuesday, he said the decision to expel him was unjustified.

“This is not their right to expel me. I am also a member of the National Executive Committee of the party, and they cannot override that authority,” he said.

The NNPP chairman expressed surprise over the purported expulsion, adding that he was yet to understand the reasons behind the move.

“I don’t even know them. But time will tell,” he said.

He further warned that legal action would be taken against those parading themselves as party leaders.

“We will arrest them for impersonation for parading themselves as leaders of the NNPP,” Dungurawa added.

Dungurawa, who has previously appealed to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf not to abandon the NNPP, hinted at a possible positive outcome regarding the governor’s political direction.

“Since the appeal I made to Governor Yusuf not to dump the party, there has been development. God willing, he will not defect,” he stated.

His comments followed a resolution by 27 Gargari Ward executive members, who cited allegations of creating divisions within the party, instigating internal crises, failure to pay party dues, and making abusive remarks against the governor as reasons for removing him from office.

However, Dungurawa described the allegations as baseless and insisted that his leadership of the party remains intact.

He reiterated his commitment to the NNPP and its ideals, stressing the importance of party unity and discipline.

The Kano State NNPP has been experiencing internal tensions, particularly following rumours of a possible move by the governor to the All Progressives Congress, which has triggered mixed reactions among party members.

Dungurawa urged party members to remain calm, law-abiding, and focused on strengthening the NNPP in Kano State, asserting that leadership disputes would be resolved in accordance with the party’s constitution.
