A violent incident erupted in the Hotoro quarters, Nasarawa local government area of Kano State, after a mosque muezzin was killed shortly after calling the dawn (Subhi) prayer.

Our source reports that the incident occurred at Yusuf Garko Mosque in Maraba Quarters, where the victim, Ladan Malam Zubairu, a resident of the area, was attacked and slaughtered by an unidentified assailant.

Eyewitnesses said the muezzin’s distress scream alerted residents, who immediately mobilised and pursued the suspect.

The assailant was reportedly apprehended by an angry mob and lynched on the spot.

The mob also went further to set the suspect’s residence ablaze, leading to the destruction of property and heightened tension in the neighbourhood.

Speaking with journalists, the deceased’s son, Isa Kasim, said his father had gone out at dawn to call Muslims to prayer.

He explained that after making the first call, his father usually sat briefly to recite supplications before the second call.

“He had just finished the first call and was seated when someone entered the mosque with a weapon, grabbed him and slaughtered him. In short, his throat was slit,” Kasim said.

He added that following the attack, some youths in the area mobilised and killed the assailant.

“By the will of God, the attacker did not escape. Members of the community gathered, tracked him down and killed him,” he said.

Kasim also revealed that after the assailant was killed, residents discovered the cleric’s severed throat wrapped in a nylon bag inside the suspect’s pocket.

Confirming the incident, Kano State Police Public Relations Officer CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa said the situation has since been brought under control, with normalcy fully restored.

This was contained in a statement issued by the police command on Monday.

According to the statement, ‘’operatives recovered the victim’s severed throat from the suspect’s pocket, further confirming the brutality of the crime. Both the deceased and the suspect were evacuated to Mohammed Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital, where they were certified dead and are awaiting autopsy.

The Police Command appealed to members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies, urging anyone with useful information to come forward, with assurances that all information will be treated confidentially.
